圆周率 (π) 是圆的周长与直径之比，人们早在数千年前就已知道它的存在。甚至在公元前，古代数学家就已经找到了精确到两位数的 pi 近似值 (3.1)。巴比伦人使用 25/8 作为圆周率的近似值。古埃及人使用 16/9 的平方作为圆周率。接下来改进圆周率近似值的是中国数学家。中国近似值精确到七位 (3.141592)。

在希腊，阿基米德使用在圆外画一个多边形和在圆内画一个多边形，将圆周率扩展为三位数 (3.14)。最后，当无穷级数被开发出来时，人们可以用笔和纸计算出圆周率的位数，但这非常耗时。直到计算机出现，计算出一百万位圆周率才变得切实可行。本书中就是这些结果。
