集合是现代数学的根基。数论、算术、代数、几何、三角、微积分的每条原理，都可以用集合来描述。越早理解集合的原理、语言与记号，越能为孩子快速而扎实地吸收高阶数学做好准备。

集合的一个定义是："能明确判断任意一个对象是否属于其中的一簇对象。" "一簇"就是任何成群的东西。"对象"可以是任何事物：一个玩具、一个数字，甚至是另一个集合。"成员资格"是关键：要组成一个集合，必须能准确分清什么在集合里、什么不在集合里。每个集合都要有清晰的定义。

本书从可纳入集合的对象类型与各集合的定义讲起。"一个秋千架是一组挂在同一根横杆上的秋千。'秋千'是指能来回摆动、孩子可以坐上去的东西。"本书始终强调这一定义。与孩子讨论本书时，也请强调给出的定义，并判断书外的事物是否符合这些定义。

《秋千集合》教孩子把现实情境转成数学表述，比如"f 是 B 的元素"，并学习把表示"属于集合"的数学语句翻译成口头语言。
