作者董永良教授在此書中所收集的三十一篇短文，多為二Ｏ二二年到二Ｏ二三年間完成的新作。目前這世界正處於動盪不安之時期，做為海外的華裔讀書人，要有一點我國古人處亂世的智慧，方能在異地求生存。此外，想到在這一生中所碰到的機遇與機緣，就覺得自己一定要懂得惜福呀！珍惜幸運的讀書與工作機會，珍惜可貴的師恩、友情與親情，珍惜己之所有，不要去貪戀己之所無；對人要寬厚、誠懇，少一份苛求，多一層包容，這就是本書中所想要表達的一種意境。
退休與惜福
我幼年離開故鄉，在台灣接受中學與大學教育，六十一年前手提一個箱子，踏上美國這片土地，讀完書即在學術界謀得一席之地，現在已經退休二十多年了。這一章中所記述的，是退休後的一些瑣事，蒙受上蒼眷顧，一路走來十分順暢。我對惜福之道有一份了解，知道為人處世要寬容謙遜，也很懂得珍惜自己一生的師恩、親情與友情。
中國文化對我的影響極為深遠，雖然已經在美國這麼久了，我的工作又是在數理方面，但是我的思維、談吐，以及生活習慣，還是很中國化的。二Ｏ一八年我曽經出版過一本書《海外散記》( EHG Books ) ，在〈自序〉中我寫道：
我寫這本散記，是想藉陳述一部分個人的經驗與感受，來描繪一個華裔讀書人久居異鄉之孤寂，其對世事之牽掛與無奈，以及對故土的懷想與期待之情。已經有這麼多年了，還是人在他鄉心在漢，就以此書做為我旅居美國五十六個年頭的紀念品吧！
現在我再用這幾句話，來表達我出版這本書的本意。
