中国有个成语叫识文断字，今人可能不太明白什么是断字，原来中国古代，文章是没有标点符号的，字与字之间紧密相挨，完全没有隔断，所以同一篇文章，不同的断字就可以产生出完全不同的意思来，就如同一个视频资料，根据需要，也完全可以编辑出截然不同的结果一样，因而，古人不但要识字，更重要的还是要学会断字，这样一来，由什么人来断字，怎么样断字就显得尤为重要了。
古汉语没有标点符号，后人因为断句不同而产生歧义的例子不胜枚举，本不足为奇，就是现在我们翻译外国的经典论著也会经常出现错误，这些都不是问题的症结所在，关键是掌握话语权和解释权，一旦掌握解释权，那么一切就都可以按照掌权者的需要而任意断章取义，任意解释了。
