Die berühmte "Abhandlung über den Ursprung der Sprache" entstand als Beitrag zu einer von der Berliner Akademie 1770 ausgeschriebenen entsprechenden Preisfrage. Herder wurde für die Abhandlung ausgezeichnet; im Druck erschien sie erstmals 1772. Herder verwirft darin den vermeintlich göttlichen Ursprung der menschlichen Sprache und erkennt in ihr vielmehr die eigentliche Verkörperung der geistigen Natur des Menschen. Dabei stellt er einen Bezug zur Entwicklung der menschlichen Gesellschaft her: "Der Mensch ist in seiner Bestimmung ein Geschöpf der Gesellschaft: die Fortbildung einer Sprache wird ihm also natürlich, wesentlich, notwendig."
