Il presente volume è la prima traduzione italiana di Akropolis, dramma di Stanisław Wyspiański composto nel 1904. Come in un odierno ‘museo virtuale’, i personaggi scendono giù da monumenti e arazzi della cattedrale di Cracovia e si animano, dando vita a una fantasmagoria poetica che unisce e fonde epoche e matrici diverse – greco-latina, ebraica, polacca – dell’unica ecumene culturale europea. Una sintesi delle culture che avrebbe poi ispirato un maestro del teatro del Novecento come Jerzy Grotowski, il quale, nel 1962, reinterpreterà Akropolis ambientandolo non in una cattedrale, bensì in un campo di sterminio, quale tragico risultato e culmine della storia europea. La postfazione di Dariusz Kosiński si concentra su scopi e modi della rilettura grotowskiana del capolavoro di Wyspiański.
