Bhutan may be a little off the beaten track, but who has not heard of Gross National Happiness, Bhutan's unique approach to measuring national well-being? It is not mere hype, as the author found during his visit. But Bhutan offers more than just an opportunity to experience to experience its unique culture. The flight from Kathmandu to Bhutan is an adventure in itself, with spectacular views of the great Himalayan peaks and an exciting landing at Paro airport. There are also unique animals such as the Takin and enjoyable walks and hikes; including the author's short but arduous trek to the Tiger's Nest at 3,200 metres and the Gangtey Nature Trail in the Valley of the Cranes. The scenery is gorgeous, with snowy mountains, moss-draped forests and winding rivers. The author also spent a few days living with the monks of a Buddhist Monastery near Kathmandu and gained a better understanding of the Buddhist concepts of impermanence and mindfulness, as well as their respect for all life - concepts that can help anyone to improve their own lives. We should value material things only to the extent that they do not become ends in themselves, nor harm the environment. All things change and impermanence itself is built into the fabric of the universe. Be mindful of each moment for its own sake, appreciating and enjoying what is now without either regret for the unalterable past or yearning for an unknowable future. Respect and compassion for all life drives those of us who care for our environment and all the creatures that share our planet. The author was in Nepal during the Diwali Festival and the book captures the atmosphere, excitement and rituals that make Diwali (aka the Festival of Lights) so special.
