Arabella Mason has grown up in isolation at Linwood Manor, restricted by her uncle's rigid ideas of what a young girl needs or wants. But when he brings a young, fashionable earl to the country estate, Arabella's life is turned upside down.

Lord Edmund Moreland, the Earl of Cumberwell, is urbane and handsome, and has a penchant for helping women discover pleasure. He is also an astute man of business, and when he wins Linwood Manor from Biddulph Rogers in a game of cards, he immediately begins to make changes.

He is not, however, prepared for the unexpected presence of a young woman, Rogers' niece, who is left without recourse when the only home she knows is suddenly the property of a stranger.

Arabella must plan for a future in a world of which she knows nothing. Edmund's conscience will not allow him to forsake a woman in trouble.

Together they embark on a journey of passion. But will Arabella's naivety and Edmund's pride prevent them from discovering love?
