Carl Einstein (1885-1940) veröffentlichte seine Erzählung "Bebuquin", zu der er sich erklärtermaßen von den Avantgardisten Mallarmé und Baudelaire inspirierte fühlte, im Jahr 1912. Im Zentrum des bei Erscheinen als literarische Sensation empfundenen Buches steht der nur schemenhafte skizzierte junge Mann Bebuquin, der in eine Abfolge alogischer, sprunghaft-fantastischer Ereignisse gerät. Die Psychologie der Figuren wie eine nachvollziehbare Handlung interessieren den Autor dabei nicht, die Absicht ist vielmehr, "mit der Willkür die Kausalität zu beschämen". Das als eines der wenigen Beispiele für "absolute Prosa" geltende Werk beeinflusste namentlich den Expressionisten Gottfried Benn und den Dadaisten Hugo Ball.
