Dabei wurden Urkunden, Geschäftsbücher der Firma aus dieser Zeit, Anzeigen und Berichte in zeitgenössischen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften und natürlich die Verlagswerke selbst ausgewertet. Daraus ergibt sich ein deutliches Bild von Schotts Geschäftstätigkeit: wie viele seiner Kollegen war er Verleger, Kommissionär und Musikalienhändler zugleich und trieb daneben einen umfangreichen Handel mit mancherlei anderen Waren.
