Overview of Betta Fish.

Origin and History.

Scientifically referred to as Betta splendens, betta fish are among the most widely kept freshwater aquarium fish in the world. Southeast Asia's shallow waterways, particularly those of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, are where they first appeared. The fish are often found in ponds, streams, and rice paddies, where the warm, slowly moving water is ideal for their growth.

In the past, betta fish were more than just decorative pets; they were an essential part of the local cultures in which they originated. Originally developed for their vivid colors and violent temperament, they were used in fish combat, a traditional Thai sport called "Ikan Laga." This is a centuries-old custom that has its origins in gaming and leisure. The combatants gave rise to the beautiful variety we see today because they were carefully bred for resilience, beauty, and fighting capability.
