Bina had just filled her wooden cup with water when the bush beside her sneezed. First came a rustle, then a very surprised bear's face. A yellow birch leaf sat right on its nose. The blueberry girl held her cup steady and smiled. "Good morning," she said. "Does that bush usually sneeze, or is this a special occasion?"
"Only when I'm sitting in it," the bear cub replied. His name was Brum, and he had been listening for a strange sound coming from the mountains. It sounded like tiny silver bells, although there was no church or bell tower out there. Bina had heard it sometimes, too. They tilted their heads in the same direction, and somewhere beyond the birches, a faint chime rang out again.
A stubborn leaf and a shared laugh begin an unexpected friendship. Brum tells Bina about Silver Lake, and her ordinary walk turns into a plan: together, they will follow the trail and search for the mysterious sound. With their families informed and their supplies ready, they take the first step toward something they do not yet understand.
This is only a glimpse of the world ahead-full of surprises, secrets, and unexpected turns. You will discover much more about the adventure inside the book. The real adventure unfolds there, as the story deepens and new sides of Bina and Brum's world open up. There is so much more to discover, and their journey has only just begun.
