Klabund erzählt die Geschichte der berühmten spanischen Dynastie Borgia. Anhand ausgewählter Ereignisse skizziert er die Skrupellosigkeit und moralischen Verfehlungen einer machthungrigen Familie, die ihre Kritiker und Gegner durch Intrigen und raffinierte politische Winkelzüge zu lähmen wusste. Im Zentrum steht Rodrigo Borgia (1431-1503), der spätere Papst Alexander VI., der zu den schillerndsten Figuren der Renaissance zählte und durch den fragwürdigen Lebenswandel während seines Pontifikats dem Ansehen der Kirche großen Schaden zufügte. Unter den Nebenfiguren sind einige der größten Persönlichkeiten der damaligen Zeit, u.a. treten Michelangelo und Machiavelli auf.§Als Vorlage für die Erzählung diente Jacob Burckhardts bahnbrechende kulturgeschichtliche Abhandlung "Kultur der Renaissance in Italien" (1860). Klabund arbeitete in den Jahren 1924-1927 an "Borgia", 1928 wurde der Roman posthum veröffentlicht.
