Build beginner-friendly soft-robotic systems that sense touch, control movement, and respond safely with CircuitPython.

Soft robotics combines flexible materials with sensors, actuators, electronics, and control software. Instead of relying only on rigid joints and metal frames, a soft robot can bend, stretch, squeeze, inflate, or adapt during contact.

CircuitPython for Soft Robotics shows you how to control flexible actuators, tactile pressure sensors, artificial muscles, pumps, valves, servos, and wearable feedback devices using lightweight Python on supported microcontroller boards.

This practical beginner-friendly guide will help you:

  • Understand what makes a robot soft and how soft robots differ from rigid robots
  • Build a safe low-voltage workbench for electronics, pressure, heat, and moving parts
  • Choose suitable CircuitPython boards, sensors, actuators, drivers, power supplies, tubing, and flexible materials
  • Install CircuitPython firmware and work with the CIRCUITPY drive, code.py, libraries, and the serial console
  • Control digital outputs, read buttons, use analog inputs, generate PWM signals, and communicate with I²C sensors
  • Read force-sensitive resistors, flex sensors, stretch sensors, capacitive touch inputs, air-pressure sensors, and temperature sensors
  • Calibrate raw sensor values, set baselines, reduce noise, create thresholds, add hysteresis, and detect drift
  • Drive pumps, solenoid valves, vibration motors, servos, and other actuators through suitable driver circuits
  • Control pneumatic soft actuators with inflate, hold, release, pressure limits, and state-machine logic
  • Experiment with beginner-safe artificial-muscle mechanisms, including shape-memory alloy wire and cable-driven flexible fingers
  • Create closed-loop control using pressure, touch, grip force, dead bands, proportional response, timeouts, and safety limits
  • Build a tactile soft gripper that detects contact, limits grip force, handles fragile objects, and releases safely
  • Build a wearable tactile-assist device with flex sensing, pressure detection, vibration feedback, calibration, and manual controls
  • Record sensor data, tune thresholds, compare repeated tests, and diagnose inconsistent motion
  • Move from breadboard prototypes to portable devices with strain relief, protected sensors, safe startup, watchdog protection, configuration files, and maintenance records

The book builds each system from tested subsystems. You will confirm that a sensor works, confirm that an actuator works, and then combine sensing, decision-making, driver hardware, and movement into complete soft-robotic projects.

No previous programming, electronics, or robotics experience is required. The examples use readable CircuitPython code, practical wiring habits, clear safety checks, and small projects that grow into tactile and pneumatic control systems.

This book does not cover high-pressure pneumatics, medical treatment devices, human-lifting equipment, mains-powered actuator circuits, explosive gases, hazardous chemicals, or unsupervised machinery. The wearable project is an educational feedback device, not a medical product.

Learn to sense, decide, actuate, measure, and improve soft robots safely-one controlled CircuitPython project at a time.
