Clay Documentaries is a compilation of writer Laurie Holder's memories of growing up with his sister (also a journalist) in "the T," part of the town of Garner just south of Raleigh, NC in the 1940s and '50s. There, both Black and White families lived for generations, products of both formal, state-enforced segregation (children went to different schools, restaurants did not serve Blacks, etc.) and informal, social separation enforced by adults of both races. Yet both adults and children in the T related to each other in harmony for the most part, and in some cases, actual friendships.
Mr. Holder's book is a loving portrait of life in an era that slowly pointed the way to the "New South" of NC governors in the 1960s and '70s-and that continues to be buried by more recent changes in the culture of the United States.
