Some losses are written off as the cost of doing business. Some losses are still alive when the paperwork clears them.

Maren Osei runs the overnight shift at a sprawling cargo facility outside Newark - six people, an ocean of freight, and a shrinkage rate low enough that nobody upstream ever asks questions. When her most reliable employee vanishes mid-shift without a trace, the company's answer is simple: he probably just walked off the job. People do that. It happens.

Maren knows better. And the detective who finally starts listening to her knows something worse: the numbers don't just look wrong. They look fed.

What's moving through Maren's facility isn't cargo loss. It's cover - for something that has learned to hide inside an acceptable margin of error, feeding on what a black-market organ trade leaves behind, and growing considerably more patient, and considerably more hungry, than anyone still willing to look the other way.

Hurting it isn't the same as killing it. And the closer Maren gets to finding out exactly what she's actually been shipping out of her own warehouse, the more she understands: some systems aren't broken. They're working exactly the way something wanted them to.

Cold Chain is a horror-thriller about what a company will quietly absorb rather than investigate, the real cost of an "acceptable loss," and how far one woman will go to make sure nobody else becomes one.
