Al adentrarse en sus páginas, el lector toma conciencia de la diferente manera que existe a la hora de abordar las cuestiones éticas en la tradición filosófica continental europea y en la anglosajona. El método seguido por el autor es el propio de la filosofía analítica, aunque teniendo muy presente a Aristóteles y su preocupación por aclarar los sentidos morales que se descubren en el lenguaje cotidiano. Dos son los objetivos perseguidos por la obra: por una parte, refutar la teoría utilitarista del deber (Moore) y, por otra, criticar el subjetivismo axiológico. En esta línea, el autor pretende reivindicar el intuicionismo como base para elaborar una adecuada teoría del conocimiento de las realidades morales. William D. Ross (1877-1971) fue profesor en Oxford y un destacado filósofo analítico. Sus investigaciones se centran en el ámbito de la ética y de la filosofía de Aristóteles.
