Peintre de retables offrant ses services à de grands prélats catholiques, Cranach, l'ami de Luther, va concevoir, au moment de la Réforme, toute une imagerie protestante propre à déjouer les excès dans la dévotion. La variété des thèmes embrassés par Cranach, portraits, scènes bibliques ou mythologiques, allégories à visée morale, témoigne d'une prodigieuse inventivité iconographique. Mais, au-delà des types féminins et des motifs érotiques inlassablement déclinés par l'artiste et son atelier, ce qui semble donner son unité à cette œuvre est une méditation profonde sur le pouvoir des images.
