In Josef von Eichendorffs 1837 erschienener Novelle "Das Schloß Dürande" wird das Grundthema der Liebe zwischen Hippolyt, dem jungen Graf von Dürande und Gabriele, der Schwester des gräflichen Jägers Renald, in einen neuen, stärker gesellschaftlich geprägten Zusammenhang gestellt. Die Handlung spielt hauptsächlich auf einem einsamen, "in der schönen Provence" gelegenen Adelssitz nahe Marseille, teils aber auch im revolutionären Paris bzw. am Hof Ludwigs XVI. in Versailles, wohin es Renald und Gabriele verschlägt. Hier kündigt sich schon die Katastrophe an, die bald eintreten wird...
