Vorlage für diese umfangreiche, 1832 veröffentlichte Novelle von Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853) ist ein historisches Ereignis aus dem Jahr 1459, als die nordfranzösische Stadt Arras von einer Welle des Hexenwahns überrollt wurde. Tieck hat zwei Frauen in das Zentrum seiner Erzählung gestellt: die junge Witwe Catharina Denisel, die von der Kirche denunziert und der Hexerei beschuldigt wird, und die als Heilige verehrte Bettlerin Gertrud, die schließlich dem religiösen Wahn verfällt und sich selbst der Hexerei bezichtigt.
