Der Journalist und Schriftsteller Hugo Bettauer (1872-1925) gab in den 20er Jahren in Wien eine Zeitschrift für sexuelle Aufklärung heraus und veröffentlichte daneben eine Reihe skandalumwitterter Erfolgsromane. In "Die freudlose Gasse" aus dem Jahr 1924 schildert er drastisch den sozialen Niedergang und die daraus resultierende Armutsprostitution im Wien der Nachkriegszeit. Der Roman wurde 1925 mit Greta Garbo erfolgreich verfilmt, im selben Jahr erschoss ein rechtsradikaler Eiferer Hugo Bettauer in seinem Büro.
