Er ist bestrebt, durch ein kompliziertes System von Heiraten und Adoptionen sämtliche Verwandtschaftsgrade in seiner Person zu vereinigen. Es gelingt ihm, durch vier nach einem bizarren Plan ausgeklügelten Ehen sein eigener Vater, Großvater, Neffe und Onkel zugleich zu werden. Childerich, der letzte Merowinger im 20. Jahrhundert, verfiel auf die Vorstellung von der "Totalität der Familie" und ihrer vollen Repräsentanz im Ein-Mann-Prinzip. "La famille c'est moi." Schließlich aber gerät der Merowinger in Konflikt mit anderen Sippen, wird überwältigt, seiner weit über die Grenzen des Gewöhnlichen hinausgehenden Manneskraft beraubt und zu einem Schattendasein verurteilt.§
