Schickele fühlte sich beiden Nationen zugehörig und versuchte mit seinen Texten einen Weg für politische, gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Gemeinsamkeiten zu ebnen. Trotz seiner Sensibilität für dieses Thema und seines großen literarischen Talents sind die Werke Schickeles heute leider nahezu in Vergessenheit geraten. Die Witwe Bosca (1933) verfasste Schickele während seiner Zeit im südfranzösischen Exil. Der Roman wird allgemein als Ausdruck der Enttäuschung des Autors über das Scheitern der Weimarer Republik gedeutet.
