Correcting the record did not restore the water. It revealed how easily a crisis can become permanent when the evidence behind it is incomplete.
Following the findings of the previous inquiry, Mara pursues a fragmentary lead known as Greenwake: scattered agronomy notes, water-maintenance records, and field practices preserved by separate custodians. At Morrow Flats, a new water warning threatens an already strained community and forces difficult questions about how scarce resources should be allocated.
The deeper Mara investigates, the more troubling the pattern becomes. Resources are moved. Local capacity changes. Later assessments treat the resulting conditions as if they had always been inevitable.
But a pattern is not proof of motive. Missing records do not explain themselves, and a measurement can reveal only what it was designed to capture.
With Ilyan committed to urgent responsibilities elsewhere, Mara must weigh historical evidence against a tightly limited present-day trial. Every possible restoration method carries costs: labour, materials, maintenance, and risk. Greenwake may preserve knowledge worth sharing-but it is not a master plan, a universal cure, or a promise that one settlement's solution will work for another.
The Greenwake Protocol is the third novel in Dust & Dawn, a post-apocalyptic speculative thriller series about survival, ecological restoration, institutional accountability, and the difficult choices behind rebuilding a broken world.
Some knowledge survives collapse. The harder task is discovering what it can prove-and deciding what to do with it.
