Epictetus was born a slave. His master crippled him. Rome exiled him. And out of that life came the most dangerous idea ever written down: no one can touch you without your consent.

His handbook, the Enchiridion, has been the entry point to Stoicism for nineteen centuries. This edition makes it usable. A clean, modern rendering - no archaic fog, no academic hedging - with an interpretation after every one of its fifty-three chapters that shows you what it means and what to do with it before the day is over.

He wrote nothing down. A student took his teaching and compressed the whole system into one short book - a field manual, built to be used under pressure, every chapter a drill. Emperors studied it. Marcus Aurelius built the Meditations on it. This little handbook is the source code behind modern Stoicism, and behind much of cognitive therapy: the discovery that it is never the event that breaks you - it is your judgment about the event. And your judgment is the one thing on earth that belongs entirely to you.

This edition is built to be used, not admired:

  • Forged from three classic translations (Oldfather, Long, Higginson), compared line against line and resolved into one clear text.
  • An interpretation after every chapter - in the tradition of The 48 Laws of Power: the logic exposed, the application made concrete. What the chapter says, why it works, what to do with it today.
  • A fighter's philosophy - how to stop wagering your happiness on things you don't control, take an insult without flinching, and want what happens, so that nothing can disappoint you.

Two thousand years ago, a slave figured out how to be freer than his masters. This is the manual he left behind.

Rendered and interpreted by Robert Whitfield.
