Ses fables, qu'on croyait perdues au Moyen Âge, furent redécouvertes au XVIIe siècle. La Fontaine, qui s'en inspira largement, admirait l'élégance et la brièveté du style. Tout comme le moraliste français, Phèdre cherchait par ces écrits à « faire rire et apprendre la vie par des conseils avisés ».
