Su inspiración fundamental fue Esopo, pero muchos de sus textos son originales y nos ayudan a comprender mejor la moral del mundo romano de la época. De escritura diáfana y temáticas muy originales, se trata de un autor que prácticamente ha influido a todos los fabulistas modernos, desde el Arcipreste de Hita hasta La Fontaine.
