Fidia (Atene 490 circa - 430 circa a.C.) scultore e architetto, sovrintende ai lavori del Partenone nella Atene di Pericle, la più importante opera pubblica del tempo. Per il grande tempio realizza la statua di Athena parthenos e progetta le decorazioni scultoree dei frontoni e delle metope, in gran parte oggi conservate a Londra, nel British Museum. Tra le sue opere anche lo Zeus per il tempio di Olimpia, oggi perduta, ma considerata tra le Sette meraviglie del mondo. Il suo stile rappresenta l'ideale di compostezza, eleganza, varietà, dinamicità attribuite all'arte classica. Dopo il declino e la caduta Pericle ne seguì il destino, morendo in prigione, forse avvelenato.
