Niggle è un pittore. Non di quelli affermati, anche perché ha sempre avuto tante cose a cui badare. Da tempo è assillato da un quadro, iniziato con una foglia sospesa nel vento e diventato poi un albero popolato da rami, tantissime foglie, uccelli e dietro il quale si apre un paesaggio. Il dipinto diventa ogni giorno più ampio e ricco ma Niggle deve partire per un viaggio. Non ci sono qui stregoni, draghi o hobbit ma il testo venne scritto nel 1945, proprio mentre Tolkien era assorbito dalla stesura del "Signore degli anelli". Nella cura del pittore intento a disegnare foglia per foglia il suo grande quadro i lettori possono scorgere in controluce il travaglio dell'autore nel momento di massima ispirazione e intento a rendere unica ed eterna la sua opera più importante. La storia del pittore Niggle è un piccolo gioiello di grande ricchezza simbolica, da riscoprire in una nuova traduzione. Con una nota di Tom Shippey.
