Every bridge in the country gets inspected.
Federal law says who is allowed to do it.

Bridge inspection is not a job you can talk your way into. The qualification is written in federal regulation, and one route to team leader asks for five years of bridge inspection experience and no degree at all. The part nobody mentions: most of that time has to be genuine bridge safety inspection, a named program manager decides whether yours counts, and some states - New York among them - require an engineering licence regardless.

Which is why the door you can actually walk through this year is the one below it. The crew seat, working under a team leader, is not gated by the federal rule at all. That is where the five years come from, and it is the step every other source skips straight past.

The regime traces back to a bridge collapse in 1967 and has been amended roughly once a decade. Its most recent overhaul is already finished - the rule took effect in 2022 and its transition window closed in 2024 - so there is no looming compliance date to be stranded on.

It is written for the construction inspector, survey crew chief, CAD or GIS technician, rope-access worker or ironworker who wants a state DOT or consultant seat. The published shelf is technical manuals and civil-service test prep; nothing explains the routes, who employs inspectors, or what the work is really like - climbing, confined spaces, traffic control and weather included.

It is honest about the headwind too: risk-based rules now allow longer intervals between routine inspections on some structures, which shifts the volume of work rather than removing it. That gets explained rather than hidden. An Australian appendix covers the separate local bridge inspection regime.

The rule already names the door. Most people never read it.
