Harlan "Hawk" Thorne used to wear a Federation badge. Then someone powerful framed him, and the people he trusted looked the other way. Now he's half man, half machine, chasing bounties on the edge of known space with a plasma revolver and a bad attitude.

His latest job looks simple: bring in Elias Crowe, a smuggler and professional double-crosser hiding in the dusty mining town of Dusthaven. But Crowe is sitting on stolen cargo worth more than the whole planet. Once Hawk gets his hands on it, every bounty hunter, pirate, and Federation trooper in the sector comes gunning for them both.

The cargo leads to the ruins of an ancient alien race and to the truth about The Collective. Everyone thought those machines were destroyed in the Wars. They weren't. They're back, they're pulling strings at the top of the Federation, and they have plans for Hawk that started long before he ever picked up a gun.

To survive, two men who can't stand each other will have to cross burning forge worlds, haunted ghost ships, and neon cities. They'll need pirates, rebels, and alien warriors on their side, and they'll have to finish the war that took everything from Hawk.
