Paul Scheerbart (1863-1915) gehört zu den großen Literaturexzentrikern des späten Kaiserreichs. Er war u. a. mit Erich Mühsam und Richard Dehmel befreundet und verfasste bizarre phantastische Erzählungen und Romane. Daneben beschäftigte sich der Autor mit der sich gerade formierenden modernen Architektur, namentlich dem Bauen mit Glas. Zu diesen bahnbrechenden Texten gehört auch der vorliegende, dem Architekten Bruno Taut gewidmete aphoristische Essay, eine einzigartige Mischung aus literarischer Vision und utopischer Architekturtheorie. Taut wiederum widmete Scheerbart seinen 1914 auf der Kölner Werkbund-Ausstellung errichteten expressionistischen Glaspavillon, der als einer der Urbauten der Architekturmoderne gilt.
