Collection bilingue. Format 12,5 X 19 cm"Collection des Universités de France - Série latine" (French Universities Collection - Latin Series) A bilingual Collection directed by Jean-Louis Ferrary and Jean-Yves Guillaumin.Published under the auspices of the Guillaume Budé Association (whose mission is to preserve and promote classical culture in particular, and intellectual culture in general), the "Universités de France" Collection, referred to as the "Budé Collection," will consist of all known Greek and Latin works up to the middle of the sixth century of our era, constantly updated and presented with their most recent French translations, introductions, biographical sketches, notes and a critical apparatus. These texts will constantly be the subject of new and personal critical reviews. They are edited on the basis of those manuscripts deemed to have been the most influential, which is why they constitute authentic critical editions. Each text features a brief critical apparatus, devoid of any irrelevant material, which substantiates its selection. This information enables the reader to assess not only the value of the text that he or she is reading, but also that of the alternative versions excluded by the publisher. The translations are intended to be both accurate and literary. The Guillaume Budé Association is of the opinion that the translation of a complete work cannot be approached in the same way as a single page, and that translators should strive, above all else, to reproduce the movement, colour, and tone of the ancient work. They therefore decided that it was essential that each translation be presented alongside the original text. The various introductions furnish all of the details that the reader needs to form a general understanding of the author and the work. The biographical sketches concern dates, composition, sources, and the various parts of the work. The footnotes on translated pages, or at the end of each book, provide specific historical explanations. Several recent volumes even feature rather copious annotations, depending upon the nature of the work concerned. All books are available in paperback and are printed on durable tinted paper made especially for this collection.
