Spitzen waren eine Passion von Leopold Iklé (1838-1922), dem Spross einer Hamburger Textildynastie, der in St. Gallen im Zuge des industriellen Booms um 1900 erfolgreich Maschinenstickereien produzierte. Er exportierte unter anderem nach England, Frankreich und in die USA - St. Gallen war damals weltmarktführend in dieser Sparte. Ursprünglich diente seine Sammlung handgefertigter europäischer Klöppel- und Nadelspitzen aus der Zeit vom 16. bis 19. Jahrhundert als Inspiration für die Textilentwerfer seiner Firma. Durch Iklés Sammlerleidenschaft übertraf sie jedoch schnell die praktischen Ansprüche an eine einfache Vorlagensammlung. 1904 schenkte er sie dem Textilmuseum St. Gallen. Historische Spitzen präsentiert einen umfassenden Überblick und die Highlights der Spitzen dieser einzigartigen Sammlung.
