How to pray? This question is answered in a unique and very specific way in the thirteenth-century Modi Orandi Sancti Dominici, Ross. 3 (1) from the Vatican Library. How to Pray: Dominic and the Desert presents an analysis of the text of the Nine Modes of Praying of Saint Dominic. These modes are unique in their bodiliness, as described in text and shown in illustrations. Even more important for a deeper understanding of these methods of praying comes from the wisdom of the Desert Abbas as recounted in the writings of Saint John Cassian, a book that Dominic took with him wherever he went. The teachings of the desert formed the Christian life of Saint Dominic and the spirituality of his followers-the friars, nuns, sisters, and lay members of the Order of Preachers.
