Zu Beginn des Jahres 1893 lernte August Strindberg (1849-1912) die erst 20jährige österreichische Journalistin Frida Uhl kennen. Kurz darauf heirateten beide, eine Tochter wurde geboren. Die Ehe hatte jedoch keinen Bestand, dauernde Streitigkeiten führten bereits 1894 zur Trennung. Strindberg geriet daraufhin in eine schwere Lebenskrise mit Depressionen und Wahnvorstellungen, die er in seinem autobiografischen, 1897 veröffentlichten Roman "Inferno" verarbeitete. Die literarische Überwindung der sog. "Inferno-Krise" befreite Strindberg regelrecht; die kommenden Jahre bis 1907 gehörten zu den produktivsten in seinem Leben.
