Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) stammte aus Köln, wo er als Sohn eines jüdischen Kantors geboren wurde. Bereits 1833 ging der junge Cellist zur musikalischen Weiterbildung nach Paris, arbeitete dann als Theatermusiker und eröffnete schließlich ein eigenes Theater. Der internationale Durchbruch gelang ihm 1858 mit der Operette "Orpheus in der Unterwelt", der Offenbach zahlreiche Operetten folgen ließ. Der Musikkritiker und Dirigent Paul Bekker (1882-1937) führt in seinem Buch in Leben und Werk von Jacques Offenbach ein und macht deutlich, welch einzigartige Stellung der Komponist im Musikleben des 19.
