Hugo von Hofmannsthal arbeitete an seinem spätmittelalterlichen Mysterienspielen nachgebildeten Bühnenstück seit 1903. Die Uraufführung erlebte das Stück 1911 in Berlin unter Max Reinhardt, seit 1920 wird es bei den von Hofmannsthal und Reinhardt begründeten Salzburger Festspielen aufgeführt. Im Zentrum steht der reiche Jedermann, dem bei einem Fest der Tod entgegentritt, um ihn vor Gottes Richterstuhl zu führen. Doch niemand will Jedermann auf seinem schweren Gang begleiten, auch sein Geld nützt ihm nichts. Erst als er an seine guten Taten erinnert wird, findet er zurück zum Glauben und damit zur Gnade Gottes.
