Als die Otavi-Minen-und-Eisenbahngesellschaft den Bau einer eigenen Bahnlinie von Swakopmund nach Tsumeb (Namibia) beschließt, zeigt auch Regierungsbaumeister Joseph Bendix (1874-1904) aus Dülmen/Westfalen Interesse an diesem Projekt. Ende September 1903 trifft er in Swakopmund ein. Seine Mitarbeit ist jedoch von kurzer Dauer, denn im Januar 1904 erheben sich die Hereros gegen die deutsche Schutzmacht . Der Leutnant d.R. wird zur Kaiserlichen Schutztruppe eingezogen. Am 13. März 1904 gehört Bendix zu einer Erkundungsabteilung, die bei Owikokorero fast völlig aufgerieben wird. Unter den Gefallenen ist auch Joseph Bendix, einer der jüdischen Soldaten, die in den deutschen Kolonial- und Überseetruppen gedient und gekämpft haben.
