Als Arno Schmidt am Morgen des 31. Mai 1979 in seinem Arbeitszimmer einen Schlaganfall erlitt, hatte er von seinem neuen Roman Julia, oder die Gemälde erst 100 Seiten geschafft, ein Drittel des geplanten Umfangs. Schauplatz des 1983 erschienenen Fragments ist "eine Art Bückeburg" im Sommer 1979, am Steinhuder Meer. Gemeinsam bewohnt eine Gruppe von Feriengästen das Hotel "Fürstenhof". Bei einem Frühstück treffen der gebrechliche Schriftsteller Leonhard Jhering, Studienrat Rauch, ein Fabrikantenehepaar Kühne samt Sohn und die schlangenhafte Sheila Wangel aufeinander. Weitere Personen, allen voran die zehnjährige Prinzessin Julia, welche einem Gemälde entsteigt, und ein junges Mädchen mit dem Spitznamen Tausendeins, bereichern im Lauf des Tages die Szenerie. Noch einmal thematisiert Schmidt die wechselseitige Durch-dringung von Realität und Fiktion und legt einer Figur sein abschließendes Urteil in den Mund: "(...) die Welt der Kunst & Fantasie ist die wahre, the rest is a nightmare."§
