Seit dem 6. März 2015 sendet der Deutschlandfunk jeden Freitag die Sendereihe »Koran erklärt«. Bis Dezember 2016 erläuterten darin 51 islamische Theologen und Islamwissenschaftler aus acht Ländern 84 kurze Texte aus dem Koran. Diese Texte sind im vorliegenden Band versammelt. Ergänzt werden diese Auslegungen durch ein Vorwort von Willi Steul, dem Intendanten von Deutschlandradio, sowie drei Hintergrundessays: Thorsten Gerald Schneiders gibt einen Überblick über die Geschichte der Koranauslegung, Angelika Neuwirth problematisiert die »Koranexegese zwischen Theologie und Orientalistik«, und Sebastian Engelbrecht rekonstruiert »Die Beteiligung des Islams am Rundfunk in Deutschland«. Das Buch bietet Information und Aufklärung über den Koran. Es ermöglicht einen Zugang zur heiligen Schrift einer Weltreligion und lädt zu einer differenzierten Betrachtung des Korans ein. Das sind Aufgaben des öffentlichrechtlichen Rundfunks - gerade in Zeiten, in denen Ängste und Emotionen zu Vorurteilen und Ausgrenzung führen.
