When two sound hadiths appear to conflict, how are they to be read together? In al-Basa'ir, "the Insights", the Egyptian Imam and hadith master Salah al-Din al-Tijani al-Hasani sets out one hundred such questions. In each he places the hadiths side by side with their sources and gradings, then shows how they stand to one another: one abrogates the other, one is general and the other specific, one is the strict ruling and the other the concession, and so on through the twelve relationships he lists at the outset. Purification, prayer, fasting, funerals, marriage, trade and the hadd punishments are all covered.
In al-Ahadith al-Mutawatirah he gathers the hadiths that reached the rank of mass transmission: one hundred and thirty transmitted in their very wording, each followed by the Companions who narrated it, and eighty-three transmitted in meaning. Together they form a compact reference to the most firmly established sayings of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
