En apparence, les films d'Ozu Yasujirô semblent aux antipodes de ceux d'Imamura Shôhei. Pourtant Imamura avoue l'influence que Ozu a eue sur son oeuvre. Virginie Fermaud se propose ici de confronter deux de leurs oeuvres emblématiques : Voyage à Tôkyô (1953) et Profonds désirs des dieux (1968). Il s'agit d'en étudier les divergences et les convergences , d'en mettre au jour la modernité bien sûr mais en considérant également ces deux films dans la perspective de l'art et de la culture extrême-orientaux (théorie du nô, pratique des emaki - ces peintures narratives sur rouleaux - ou encore empreinte de la pensée taoïste).
