Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) veröffentlichte die Novelle "Adieu", so der Originaltitel, 1830 und ordnete sie in den zweiten Teil seines Zyklus der Comédie humaine ein: Als der napoleonische Oberst Philippe de Sucy aus russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft heimkehrt, findet er auf seinem verwahrlosten Besitz seine Geliebte vor, die er einst beim Übergang über die Beresina gerettet und die seitdem den Verstand verloren hat. Um sie ins Bewusstsein zurückzuholen, weckt er noch einmal die schmerzhaften Erinnerungen an die Tragödie. Doch als die Geliebte tatsächlich erwacht, vermag sie die wiederkehrende Erinnerung nicht zu ertragen.
