En su rescate, que costó treinta mil doblas, intervinieron su esposa, dońa Leonor de Guzmán, el maestre de Calatrava y los reyes, no sólo de Castilla, sino también de Francia, pues, entre otros muchos cargos, fue embajador en este país.
