Durch seine langjährigen Forschungen zur Lingener Stadtgeschichte erhielt der Leiter des Emslandmuseums Dr. Andreas Eiynck immer wieder Einblick in historische Fotosammlungen und private Fotoalben. Dabei entdeckte er bisweilen wahre Schätze alter Bildzeugnisse zur Lingener Geschichte. So entstand die Idee, die schönsten und interessantesten Fotos in einem historischen Bildband zu dokumentieren. Die ausgewählten Aufnahmen stammen aus den Jahren zwischen 1880 und 1975. Sie dokumentieren das Aufkommen der Fotografie in Lingen in der Zeit des Kaiserreiches und vermitteln ein umfassendes Bild des gesellschaftlichen Lebens in der Stadt um die Jahrhundertwende. Stadttopographie, Vereinswesen, Kirchen und Schulen spiegeln sich in der Fülle historischer Aufnahmen wider. Im zweiten Teil des Buches schildert der Autor anhand von Fotografien die Entwicklung Lingens in der Weimarer Zeit, im Dritten Reich, im Zweiten Weltkrieg und in der Nachkriegszeit.
