Prosper Mérimée (1803 1870) studierte zunächst Rechtswissenschaften, ehe er sich ab 1825 ganz der Literatur zuwandte. Vor allem mit seinen in einem klaren Französisch abgefassten etwa 25 Novellen hatte er großen Erfolg beim Publikum. Zumeist steht im Zentrum der Texte eine erotisch bedrohlichen Situation, so auch in seiner berühmten Erzählung "Carmen", auf der Bizets gleichnamige Oper beruht. In "Lokis", 1869 veröffentlicht und eine von Mérimées besten Erzählungen, wird diese Konstellation phantastisch zugespitzt: Der litauische Graf Szemioth ringt mit der bestialischen Seite seines Wesens: Er ist zugleich Mensch und Bär, ein unauflöslicher Konflikt, der sich schließlich in der Hochzeitsnacht katastrophal entlädt.
