Mal et modernitéHermann Broch écrivait, à New York, en 1940 : « Les dictatures sous leur forme actuelle sont tournées vers le mal radical. » C’est cette notion que Jorge Semprún interroge ici, en évoquant quelques-uns de ses anciens compagnons du Petit Camp de Buchenwald : comme une façon de relier la pensée à la vie et de faire comparaître l’Histoire devant les disparus – ceux qui, selon les mots du poète Paul Celan, ont « une tombe aux creux des nuages ».Jorge Semprún (1923-2011)Né à Madrid, exilé en France avec sa famille en 1939, il entre très jeune dans la Résistance. Déporté à Buchenwald, il est, après la guerre et jusqu’en 1963, un des dirigeants clandestins du Parti communiste espagnol. En 1988, le gouvernement espagnol le nomme ministre de la Culture, fonction qu’il exerce jusqu’en 1991. Son œuvre littéraire, centrée sur la mémoire, est tout entière marquée par l’expérience de ce mal absolu que fut le totalitarisme.
