Rome est une utopie de l'espace et du temps, et la Tour est l'aboutissement de cette utopie. Le dialogue des deux prisonniers est tour à tour gouailleur, grossier, sentimental, philosophique. L'un est romain, l'autre barbare. Pour le Romain, le suicide sera moins un geste personnel que son identification à l'utopie.Les recoupements avec l'oeuvre poétique de Brodsky, les allusions à la Russie, les citations de Sappho ou de Properce vivifient ce texte théâtralement très efficace, la meilleure des trois tentatives théâtrales du poète dissident.Ironie et émotion accompagnent notre regard sur ces deux candidats à l'utopie qui attendent la parousie du Progrès, en compagnie d'un serin."Georges Nivat.
