Dogadaki hayvanlar, bitkiler ya da cansiz varliklarin insanlar gibi düsünüp konustugu, tanrilarla insanlarin bir araya geldigi Aisopos masallarinin özünde halk kitlelerinin yöneticilere üstü kapali elestiri ve itirazlari saklidir. Edebiyat eserlerinin genellikle manzum olarak verildigi bir dönemde bu masallar nesir olarak söylenmistir. Aisopos masallarini ilkkez derleyip kitaplastiran, Iskenderiye Kütüphanesinin kurucusu Atinali filozof Dimitrios Falireasdir. Bu eserden geriye hicbir iz kalmamistir. En meshur ardili ise La Fontainedir, 12 kitapta topladigi 238 masaldan 124ünde büyük oranda Aisopostan esinlenmistir. Delphoi kehanetlerini sahtekarlik olarak niteleyen Aisopos, rahiplerin iftirasina ugramis, hirsizlikla suclanarak ölüme mahkm edilmistir.
